A professional assessment is needed to diagnose an anxiety disorder. There are many different types of anxiety disorders, some of which are GAD (generalized anxiety disorder), panic disorder and social anxiety disorder. It’s normal for you to worry, but when that worry becomes exaggerated, when it results in physical symptoms such as unexplained pain, difficulty sleeping, palpitations, muscle tension, dizziness, digestion problems etc, and when it impairs your ability to function normally, then you may have an anxiety disorder. There can be many reasons why some people develop anxiety disorders such as: a genetic pre-disposition (one of your parents have anxiety), early insecure attachment which affected your thinking patterns related to trust, difficult life experiences and your inherent nature. If left untreated, anxiety can spiral and lead to other problems such as depression. Anxiety is treatable – the gold standard in treatment is Cognitive Behavior Therapy, which helps you replace unhealthy thinking patterns with more adaptive thinking, and also teaches you how to manage stress.
